John Symond sells his superyacht

Dated: August 14, 2020
Category: Blog

We all know that it’s just the rich and wealthy (like John Symond) who own a superyacht, but the running costs and maintenance costs of owning such a luxury are causing a bit of a rethink for a few.

Discreetly selling their vessels gives them an instant revenue boost too, which enables them to invest in other things, or simply have a change of lifestyle for a while. Others simply look for a larger vessel, which offers more flexibility for a similar running cost budget.

Australian John Symond, who made his fortune selling homes and who owned the award-winning superyacht Hasna (Arabic for “beautiful”) has just been sold.

John acquired his 73 meter vessel just before his 70th Birthday, and two years later he is looking for a larger one.

John reportedly spent €105 million on building his yacht, and sold it for around €85 million. The Hasna features an 8 meter infinity pool, a 10-seat cinema, a hairdressing salon, a lift, a wellness centre, and a jacuzzi to keep the billionaire and his guests entertained.

The superyacht Hasna can sleep up to 12 guests, and can accommodate up to 21 crew and staff to take care of their every need.

The 73 m (240 ft) superyacht was launched at the Feadship yard. Both the Interior and exterior of Hasna has been styled by British designer Redman Whiteley Dixon.

John had planned to buy a bigger yacht, however, as we understand it, the coronavirus pandemic has put that plan on hold for the short term.

It was reported last September that a few New Yorkers complained to the New York Post about the Hasna being moored directly in front of the Statue of Liberty.

Said one of the complainants: “We get it, you’re rich. Maybe the yacht isn’t selling, so he figured why not park by a national monument to garner interest?”

If that was the case, the property tycoon clearly knows how to go to market, because it has now sold.

Although we do not know yet exactly who the buyer is, rumours suggest that it could be Yahn Bernier. A Seattle-based Valve developer, and corporate director, who had a part to play in building the acclaimed video-games “Portal” and “Half-Life”, as well as in Valve’s Steam distribution platform.

We believe that Bernier has renamed the yacht Lunasea (a play on words … sounds like Lunacy), and will no doubt soon be enjoying its 25-metre sundeck and other features. We will of course confirm the buyer in a future blog post, watch this space.

About John Symond:

John is a finance giant, who has an estimated worth of $638 million. He made his millions selling property and offering home loans. The yacht was originally purchased so that his glamorous wife Amber (who he married in 2016) and himself could travel around Europe, but the superyacht has not been used in around a year!

About Yahn Bernier:
Yahn, born in 1970, was originally an Atlanta patent lawyer with a degree in chemistry from Harvard. How he ended up in Seattle developing computer games is a bit of a mystery. We understand that he taught himself to program from the age of 12 and has worked on the systems code and tools for most of Valve’s titles.
