Some of the world’s leading superyacht builders are putting their heads together and sharing their thoughts and ideas about how they can make more sustainable billionaire boats going into the future.

One of the largest names in luxury boats has already held a Livestream event to share ideas with megayacht brand aficionados as well as the rest of the yachting world.

Dutch superyacht builders Oceanco held an event called NXT, which was live-streamed to other leading names in the yachting world that aimed to encourage positivity and the sharing of ideas over new sustainable yacht designs.

The live stream event included expert input from many different industries known for their expertise in sustainability and is helping to encourage free thinkers to come on board and collaborate with leading superyacht designers and builders.

Oceanco’s Black Pearl megayacht

With Oceanco’s pledge to adopt a zero-carbon future for its brand, the company already has one of the most sustainable yachts ever built in the Black Pearl.

The Black Pearl includes a hybrid propulsion system and an eco-friendly Dyna-Rig sail. It is hoped that her performance will provide the company with great insights for their next-generation of megayacht builds using even more carbon-reducing technologies.

The DynaRig masts and sailing system was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects. The 2,900 square metres of sails can be set in just seven minutes with a simple press of a button.

The hybrid propulsion system is the result of the collaboration between superyacht builders Oceanco and BMT’s specialist ship designers, Nigel Gee. The team also worked on designing the ship’s onboard waste heat recovery system.

Sustainability without compromise

The Black Pearl may be the sustainable flagship for Oceanco, but the 106.7m three-masted sailing yacht doesn’t compromise on luxury features that you would expect to find onboard any respectable billionaire boat!

Launched in 2018, the Black Pearl was designed by Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate Design. The vessel features an amazing all-glass lift that rises alongside the central mast, between decks.

The onboard accommodation includes a luxury master suite, two VIP suites, two double guest cabins and a uniquely designed full-beam beach club, which can be converted into a cinema room.

Lowering their carbon footprint

Oceanco is taking a positive lead with their new live stream events, which are planned to run regularly into the future to encourage the yachting industry to adopt carbon-neutral design and production practices.

Oceanco has already heavily invested in its Netherlands-based facilities to help lower its carbon footprint.

The live stream events plan to include a wide panel of speakers from different industries, such as the former head designer for Rolls-Royce, experts in sustainability, plus other leading-edge designers that can contribute their vast knowledge and experience to help the future of luxury yacht design.

Other Livestream events

However, Oceanco is not the first superyacht builders to dip their toes into live streaming. Heesen, another megayacht builder, has already held two live stream events called YachtTalk where a wide panel of experts have exchanged helpful knowledge, advice and ideas taking an interdisciplinary approach to yacht design and interior design.

Lürssen Live is yet another live stream event held by the famous German superyacht builder, a company well known for building the world’s largest luxury yachts. With the growing demand for smaller, faster and more sustainable megayachts, the company are now looking at ways to meet with current trends and future propulsion technologies that not only deliver on power but also on fuel efficiency.

What is apparent about these new Livestream initiatives is that the world’s leading superyacht builders are committed to looking deeper into new and innovative ways forward for the yachting sector.

It doesn’t pay to stand still in the world of megayacht design, and these leading lights are prepared to drive the change needed to meet the demands of their very discerning customers.
