You would not think that the expression ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ would be something that would be relevant to the world of Super Yachts and Mega Yachts, but in the case of the Project Ocean Megayacht, one man’s trash is another man’s escape to the seven seas and here is why:
A new 85-Foot hybrid explorer yacht is now under construction with UK-based superyacht builders, Arksen. What makes this new megayacht special is that it is being made from recycled plastic bottles and aluminium.
This eco-conscious luxury boat is currently known as Project Ocean and is being built at the Wight Shipyard Company. It will be the flagship of Arksens’s new Explorer Series of yachts, which also includes a 45-footer, a 60-footer and a 75-footer in its range.
The ethos behind the Arksen Explorer Series is to design and build a range of megayachts that encourage true off-grid living and adventures while being the latest word in creative upcycling. What we are looking at here is possibly the future of new billionaire boats.
The unique explorer design concept
The sleek and sturdy exterior design is down to the Humphreys Yacht Design company, with a strong naval architectural feel built for exploration, the hull design is highly efficient at cutting through the water to reduce emissions and running costs.
Recycled aluminium is being used to fashion the superstructure as well as the hull, and using aluminium in the build means that it can be easily recycled again once the boat has reached the end of its life.
Hybrid propulsion system
With a top speed of 14 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of between 9 and 11 knots, Project Ocean is powered by a full hybrid propulsion system. With a maximum range of up to 7,000 nautical miles, the megayacht offers wide-ranging opportunities for exploring.
What’s more, the vessel will be equipped with solar panels that will generate up to 7kW of zero-carbon electrical power – and – the onboard ventilation and heating system has also been carefully designed to increase energy efficiency.
Sustainable R&D
With an overall goal to help reduce the companies impact on the environment, Arksen is involved in ongoing research and development to help improve efficiency with more innovative designs using sustainable technologies and recycled construction materials.
The long-range capabilities of the new Arksen fleet is also an important element of their design and build focus as new yacht owners are asking for luxury yachts that can do more and travel further. But wealthy prospective owners are also demanding a higher level of fuel efficiency and sustainability from their boats, so Arksen has been listening to the desires of their target market and responding with Project Ocean megayacht, and the other boats in the series will go a long way to satisfying their wants and needs.
What’s onboard?
Project Ocean megayacht has employed Design Unlimited to carry on with the sustainable theme design and the design team are using a wide range of recycled materials to furnish the interior of the yacht. So much so that even the upholstery fabrics have been made using recycled plastic bottles.
Four sizeable cabins can comfortably sleep up to twelve guests. The full-beam master cabin has been cleverly designed with a flexible space can be used as a cinema, library, study or nursery.
With a launch date planned for spring 2022, Project Ocean megayacht is intended to be used for ocean conservation projects and research through the Arksen Foundation.
